MOT Testing
My car has an MOT advisory. Do I legally have to fix it?
No. An advisory means a fault was noted but was not serious enough to cause a fail at the time of the test. You are not legally required to fix it immediately. However, advisories are worth taking seriously because they typically describe components that will eventually fail the test. Brakes approaching minimum thickness, tyres approaching the wear limit, or a suspension component with slight play will likely be a fail at the next test if left. We recommend addressing advisories promptly rather than waiting for them to become fails.
Can I drive my car to the MOT with an expired certificate?
You can drive a vehicle with an expired MOT to a pre-booked MOT test. This is a legal exception. You cannot drive it for any other purpose with an expired certificate. If you are stopped by the police while driving a car with a failed or expired MOT for any purpose other than attending a pre-booked test, the vehicle can be seized. The test must actually be booked and you should be heading directly to the test centre.
The garage says my car needs £400 of work before it will pass. Do I have to get it done there?
No. When your car fails an MOT, you can take it away and have the repairs done wherever you choose. The garage that tested it does not own the repair. Some customers find it convenient to have the same garage repair and retest the car. Others prefer to get a second opinion on the repair cost. You have 10 working days to have the repairs completed and return for a free retest if the car was left at the test centre.
Can an MOT tester fail my car unfairly?
MOT testers are audited by DVSA and follow a precisely defined testing standard. Each item either passes or fails against a specific criterion. There is very limited subjectivity in a properly conducted test. If you believe a failure is incorrect, you can appeal to DVSA within 14 days and a DVSA vehicle examiner will retest the vehicle. If the original tester is found to have failed the vehicle incorrectly, the test fee is refunded.
Is it worth doing a pre-MOT inspection?
Usually yes, particularly for older vehicles or those that have covered high mileage since the last service. A pre-MOT inspection carried out by your garage, rather than by the MOT tester, costs relatively little and gives you the opportunity to make an informed decision about whether to repair the issues before the official test or to take the risk. Failing and then returning for a retest is not usually a problem, but some faults, particularly emissions failures, are expensive to fix under time pressure.
Car Servicing
How often should I actually service my car? The dealer says every year but the indicator light has not come on.
The service interval indicator in most modern vehicles is based on a combination of mileage, time and oil condition algorithms. It is designed to maximise the time between services to reduce the cost of ownership, not to optimise engine longevity. Annual servicing, or every 12,000 miles for higher mileage drivers, is a better practical guideline. For vehicles used predominantly for short urban journeys, every 6 months or 6,000 miles is worth considering because short trips mean the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature, which is harder on the oil.
Is premium oil actually worth it or is it a sales pitch?
For most modern engines, using the correct oil specification matters significantly more than brand. The specification, whether that is 5W-30 C3 for a BMW diesel, 0W-30 C2 for a PSA diesel, or 0W-20 for a modern low-viscosity application, determines the oil's properties at operating temperature and its compatibility with emissions systems. Using the wrong specification can accelerate timing chain wear and contaminate the DPF. Premium brands such as Castrol typically meet the required specification. Budget oils sometimes do not. We always check the specification requirement for your engine before ordering oil.
My car has never been serviced. Is it too late to start?
It is never too late to start, but be realistic about what you might find. An engine that has not been serviced for several years may have accumulated sludge deposits and may have components approaching the end of their service life. The first service on a long-neglected vehicle may trigger some additional repair recommendations. An engine flush before the oil change, and a careful inspection, will give you a clear picture of where things stand.
The dealer is quoting £450 for a full service. Is that normal?
Main dealer service pricing is typically 40 to 80% higher than a comparable service at a quality independent garage. The difference is not in the parts or the technical standard. It is in the overhead structure and brand pricing of a franchise dealership. EU Block Exemption means your manufacturer warranty is not affected by having the car serviced at an independent garage, provided the correct specification is used. An annual service at KITH Cars Garage starts from £141 for a full service.
Timing Chains
How serious is a cold-start rattle on a BMW diesel?
On a BMW N47 diesel engine, a cold-start rattle is almost certainly the timing chain and it is a serious fault that should be addressed promptly. The N47's timing chain is at the rear of the engine, making replacement a more involved job, but the alternative is allowing the chain to wear further until it slips a tooth. At that point the engine timing is thrown out, valves hit pistons, and the repair cost multiplies dramatically. The cost of a timely timing chain replacement is a fraction of the cost of an engine rebuild. If you are hearing this noise on your BMW 1, 3 or 5 Series diesel from the 2007 to 2015 era, book a diagnostic now.
How much should a timing chain replacement cost in the UK?
For most common vehicles, a complete timing chain kit replacement including labour, fresh oil and filter should be in the region of £550 to £800. BMW N47 engines and other premium vehicles with rear-mounted or complex chain arrangements typically run from £800 to £1,400 depending on the specific configuration and what else is addressed at the same time. Be wary of quotes that cover only the chain and not the full kit including tensioner, guides and sprockets. A chain replacement that skips the guides is a false economy.
Can I keep driving with a timing chain that rattles on cold start?
For a short period, possibly. The risk is that the chain wears further and eventually jumps a tooth on the sprocket. When that happens, the engine timing is thrown out immediately. On an interference engine, meaning most modern petrol and diesel units, this causes the valves and pistons to collide. The engine stops running and the damage is typically severe. We would not recommend driving further than necessary once you are hearing the cold-start rattle regularly.
Clutch and Gearbox
My clutch biting point is very high. How long have I got?
A high biting point means the clutch plate has worn down significantly and the pressure plate is having to travel further to engage it. The amount of life left is genuinely unpredictable. It could last another 10,000 miles under careful driving, or it could start to slip under load within a few hundred miles. The key risk is damaging the flywheel. When the clutch plate is worn to the point where the metal backing plate contacts the flywheel, the flywheel can be scored or, in some cases, overheated enough to crack. A flywheel replacement adds considerable cost to the job. Replacing the clutch while there is still some friction material left is the sensible decision.
Is it worth replacing the dual-mass flywheel at the same time as the clutch?
Almost always yes on higher-mileage vehicles. The gearbox comes off to access the clutch. If the DMF is worn, having the gearbox removed again to replace it separately means paying for that labour twice. The additional cost of including the DMF at the same time is relatively modest compared to the total job. The signs of a worn DMF are a deep rumble or knock at idle, shudder on light throttle at low revs, or vibration through the gearstick. We assess the DMF condition on every clutch replacement and advise accordingly.
The garage says my gearbox needs replacing. Is there a cheaper fix?
It depends entirely on the fault. A gearbox diagnosis should precede any recommendation to replace the unit. Some faults that feel like a gearbox problem are actually a clutch or hydraulic issue. Others, like worn selector forks in a manual gearbox, can be repaired by a skilled technician. Modern dual-clutch and CVT transmissions are harder to repair internally, and a remanufactured replacement unit is often the most practical solution for those. We always carry out a complex diagnostic at £122+VAT before recommending any gearbox replacement and the fee comes off the repair bill.
Brakes
My brakes are squealing but they have just been replaced. Is the garage at fault?
Brake squeal on recently replaced pads is common and usually temporary. New brake pads need a bedding-in period where the pad material transfers a thin even layer onto the disc surface. This typically takes 50 to 100 miles of varied braking including several firm stops from moderate speed. During this period some squealing is normal. If the squeal persists beyond the bedding-in period, it is worth returning to the garage. Incorrectly fitted pads, missing anti-squeal shims, or pads that are incompatible with your specific brake system can all cause persistent noise.
Is it safe to drive with a brake warning light on?
The brake warning light can illuminate for several reasons. If it appears alongside the handbrake indicator when the handbrake is released, the brake fluid level is likely low. Low fluid can indicate a slow brake fluid leak or simply that the pads have worn and the callipers have extended, displacing fluid into the callipers. Either way, have it checked immediately. A brake system with low fluid may not provide full braking performance. If the light appears without any brake pedal feel change, it may be a sensor fault. Either way, investigate before driving further than necessary.
My car pulls to the left when I brake. What causes this?
Pulling under braking is almost always a brake imbalance between the two sides of the same axle. The most common cause is a seized calliper piston on one side that is not releasing properly, causing one pad to drag and creating more braking force on that side. It can also be caused by a contaminated brake pad on one side, a stuck brake hose that is not releasing pressure, or uneven pad wear. The diagnosis involves checking calliper operation, pad condition and brake hose flexibility on both sides of the affected axle. This is a safety issue and should not be left.
Engine and DPF
Is DPF cleaning worth it or should I just get it deleted?
DPF deletion is illegal in the UK and results in an automatic MOT failure from 2014 onwards. The DPF is checked visually during the MOT and a vehicle with a DPF that has been removed or bypassed will not pass. Beyond the legal issue, deletion also modifies the engine management system in ways that can affect performance, fuel economy and reliability. DPF cleaning, carried out correctly, is effective and legal. The forced regeneration process at £72 inc VAT resolves the majority of blockages. Please do not let anyone tell you deletion is the only option.
White smoke from my exhaust. Head gasket or just condensation?
Condensation from the exhaust on a cold morning is normal and clears quickly once the engine is at operating temperature. It is water vapour from the combustion process condensing in the exhaust. Genuine head gasket white smoke is different. It is thick, persistent, has a sweet smell (which is burning coolant), and does not clear after warm-up. It will be accompanied by other symptoms: coolant level dropping without a visible external leak, bubbling in the header tank, or a creamy residue on the oil filler cap. If you are seeing persistent white smoke at operating temperature with a sweet smell, have it diagnosed immediately.
Mechanic says I need a new DPF but another garage wants to clean it. Who is right?
Both may be correct for different situations. A DPF that is blocked with soot accumulation and has not been cleaned can often be restored through forced regeneration or off-vehicle machine cleaning. A DPF that has been contaminated by engine oil from a failed turbo seal, or coolant from a head gasket leak, or one that is physically cracked, cannot be cleaned back to a usable state and must be replaced. The key is correct diagnosis. Before replacing a DPF, the root cause of the blockage or contamination must be identified and fixed. A new DPF fitted without addressing the root cause will fail again.
Engine management light came on but the car drives fine. What should I do?
A steady engine management light that does not affect how the car drives is typically a stored fault code rather than an active fault. Common causes include a failed oxygen sensor, a loose fuel filler cap, an EGR valve fault or an emissions-related issue. The car is generally safe to drive on short journeys while you arrange a diagnostic, but we would recommend getting it read soon. Some faults that initially have no drivability symptoms deteriorate progressively. The diagnostic at £30+VAT reads all stored codes and gives you a clear picture of what has triggered the light.
Bodywork
My insurance company wants me to use their approved repairer. Do I have to?
No. UK law gives you the right to choose your own repairer for any accident repair. Your insurer operates an approved repairer network for their own cost management purposes. Those garages work to the insurer's timescales and budget. You are entitled to instruct any competent, VAT-registered bodyshop to carry out your repair. KITH Bodyworks and Accident Repair Centre accepts insurance work directly. We liaise with your insurer on your behalf, provide the written estimates they require, and manage the approval process. You do not have to deal with the insurer directly.
My car has stone chips on the bonnet. Is it worth repairing them?
Stone chip repair is worth doing for two reasons. Bare metal exposed by chips begins to rust within days in wet conditions. A rust blister under the paint will eventually lift the surrounding paint and become a much larger and more expensive repair. The second reason is appearance. A bonnet with dozens of bare metal chips on the leading edge looks worn and reduces the vehicle's value at sale. A stone chip repair at £60 to £80 inc VAT addresses a cluster of chips, seals the bare metal, and prevents the rust that would otherwise follow.
SMART repair vs full panel respray. What is actually better?
For isolated damage in a limited area, a correctly executed SMART repair is as good as a full respray in terms of the visible result and durability. For damage that covers a large portion of the panel, or multiple separate areas on the same panel, a full respray produces a better result. The honest recommendation depends on the specific damage. We will always tell you which approach is appropriate rather than pushing the more expensive option.
How long should a respray last before it starts to fade?
A properly prepared and correctly applied modern paint system should last fifteen to twenty years before significant fading under normal UK conditions. The key variables are preparation quality, the number of lacquer coats applied, and the quality of the clear lacquer used. Cheap single-stage resprays with minimal preparation and thin lacquer coats will fade and peel within a few years. Our resprays use a full multi-stage system with quality automotive lacquer. Avoid direct waxes with abrasive compounds on freshly resprayed panels for the first six months to allow the paint to fully cure.
Costs and general
Why do garages charge for diagnosis? Shouldn't that be free?
Accurate diagnosis requires professional equipment that costs thousands of pounds, ongoing software subscriptions for manufacturer-specific coverage, and the time of a trained technician. Charging for diagnosis is not a racket. It is a reflection of the real cost involved. The alternative is garages that do not charge for diagnosis but then replace parts without properly identifying the fault, which is significantly more expensive for the customer. At KITH Cars Garage, the diagnostic fee is deducted in full from the repair bill if you proceed with us.
The garage quoted me on the phone without seeing the car. Should I trust it?
Phone quotes for complex jobs are almost always estimates at best. A clutch replacement quote that does not account for whether the dual-mass flywheel needs replacing, or a brake job quoted without knowing the current calliper condition, may look attractive but may not reflect the final bill. Written quotes based on a physical inspection are more reliable. We provide written quotes after a diagnostic or inspection, not phone ballpark figures.
How do I know if a garage is being honest with me?
A few practical tests. Ask for a written itemised quote before any work starts. Ask them to return any parts they have replaced, so you can verify the work was done. Ask for the Techman or equivalent job card showing the work carried out. A garage that works transparently and welcomes questions is generally more trustworthy than one that is vague about costs or resistant to itemisation. At KITH Cars Garage, every quote is written, every part returned on request, and every job recorded on the workshop management system.
Is it worth getting a pre-purchase inspection on a second-hand car?
Yes, almost always. A pre-purchase inspection at KITH Cars Garage covers the same 60-point check as a major service inspection plus a full diagnostic scan of all available modules. Faults discovered before purchase can be used to negotiate the price down, or to walk away from a vehicle with known serious issues. The cost of the inspection is typically recovered many times over on the first repair that does not need to happen because the fault was identified in advance. Many of our customers have used inspection reports to negotiate £500 to £1,000 off the asking price of a vehicle.
