Rose Hill roundabout and the Alfa TCT dual-clutch gearbox
Anyone who drives through Rosehill regularly knows the roundabout. Six roads meet, the queues are heavy at peak times, and getting round means creeping forward, stopping, then pulling away briskly into a gap before merging onto the A217 or A297. For a MiTo or Giulietta with the TCT dual-clutch automatic, that stop-start, low-speed work is the most demanding driving it does.
The TCT uses two dry clutches controlled by an actuator, and it relies on stored adaptation values to judge engagement smoothly. As the clutches wear or the values drift, owners notice jerky take-up from a standstill, a hesitation before the car moves, rough low-speed shifts or a gearbox warning on the dash. Rosehill's queues bring these symptoms out, and they are easy to feel as you edge around the roundabout by Rosehill Court or pull away towards Bishopsford Road.
We start with a scan and live data from the gearbox control unit, which shows clutch wear values, adaptation status and any stored faults. We then road test the car in low-speed traffic, because that is where the symptoms appear. Some faults are cured by a clutch adaptation or recalibration, others need clutch or actuator parts. We explain which applies and quote in writing before any work. Alongside the gearbox, we check the rest of the car, including the timing belt history on the 1.4 MultiAir, and service it with oil to the correct Fiat 9.55535 specification.
From the roundabout, Wrythe Lane runs past St Helier Hospital to Wrythe Green, then Nightingale Road and Hackbridge Road bring you into Hackbridge, about nine minutes. The first stretch runs alongside Rosehill Park East, and it avoids going back round the roundabout, which is kinder to a gearbox that is already struggling. If the gearbox has stopped selecting gears, we can arrange collection. Gearbox repairs, like all our work, come with a 3-month workmanship warranty.
