Croydon Road queues and the JTDm's EGR valve
Croydon Road through Beddington is congested at peak times, particularly heading towards Croydon and the Purley Way junction, and Beddington Lane carries a steady flow of lorries to the industrial estates. An Alfa Romeo 2.0 JTDm driven in those conditions spends much of its time at low load, and that is when the EGR system is busiest. Exhaust gas is fed back into the intake to reduce emissions, and at low speeds it carries soot that mixes with oil vapour and slowly builds up as carbon.
The symptoms creep in. A Giulietta or 159 diesel may feel flat pulling away from the lights by Beddington Park, hesitate when you ask for power, or show an engine management light with an EGR-related fault code. Left long enough, restricted gas flow can also affect the DPF, because a poorly running engine produces more soot, and the car can end up in limp mode on the way to work.
We diagnose it step by step. A scan with dealer-level diagnostic equipment shows stored codes, and live data tells us whether the EGR valve is opening and closing as commanded and whether airflow readings make sense. If the valve is sticking, cleaning may be enough; if it has failed electrically or the carbon is severe, we quote for a replacement with an OE or matching-quality part. We also check the oil level and the service history, including the timing belt date, while the car is with us.
From Beddington Corner, London Road brings you straight down to Soho Mills in a couple of minutes. From the village near Carew Manor, take Church Road to Croydon Road, turn right at Wallington Green and head north up London Road, around six minutes. If the car is in limp mode we can collect it. You get a written quote before work starts, and repairs carry a 3-month workmanship warranty.
