Short station runs, low mileage and Alfa timing belts in Morden
Morden is a commuter suburb built around the Northern line, and a lot of car journeys here are short: a run to Morden Underground station, a trip to the shops, or a weekend visit to Morden Hall Park. For an Alfa Romeo, that can mean 5,000 miles a year or fewer. It sounds gentle, but it creates a specific risk that catches owners out.
Engines such as the 1.4 MultiAir and 2.0 JTDm use a timing belt that has both a mileage limit and an age limit, whichever comes first. The rubber ages and the tensioner and idlers wear even when the car is not driven much. On a low-mileage car, the age limit is usually the one that applies, and if the belt fails, most of these engines suffer valve damage. We check the service history for the last belt change at every visit, and if there is no record, we recommend treating it as due, because there is no reliable way to judge a belt's age by looking at it.
When we replace a belt, it is done as a complete kit with the tensioner and idlers, plus the water pump where recommended, from OE suppliers such as Dayco or Gates. It is normally a full day's work, so an early drop-off before the commute from Morden works well. Because short trips are also hard on oil, and MultiAir engines are sensitive to oil condition, we service these cars with oil to the correct Fiat 9.55535 specification and check the level carefully.
From Morden, the route runs from Morden Hall Road to the Morden Hall roundabout, which is busy, then along Morden Road past Morden Hall Park into Mitcham and south on Carshalton Road to Hackbridge, about 12 minutes. From Lower Morden, St Helier Avenue towards Rose Hill and then Wrythe Lane is an alternative. We give a written quote before any work, and repairs carry a 3-month workmanship warranty.
