Norbury queues and the MultiAir engine's warning signs
Drivers from Norbury know the A23 queues well, especially on the approach to Thornton Heath Pond and the Lombard roundabout. Long spells at idle are when a Giulietta or MiTo with the 1.4 MultiAir shows its first signs of trouble. A slight shake at a standstill, an idle that rises and falls, or a flashing engine light while you wait at the lights are all common early symptoms of a MultiAir fault.
The MultiAir system opens the inlet valves using engine oil under pressure, controlled by an electro-hydraulic actuator. It is sensitive to oil level and condition, and many faults begin when the oil is low or has gone too long between changes. The actuator itself can fail, but so can the oil pressure or temperature sensor, the ignition coils or the wiring, and all of these can produce similar symptoms. Replacing the actuator without testing is an expensive gamble.
Our approach is methodical. We check the oil level and condition first, read fault codes and live data, and test the related sensors and ignition components. Only if those check out do we test the actuator itself. If it needs replacing, we quote in writing and use a genuine or OE-equivalent unit, normally fitted within a day once the part is in. We also service the car with oil to the correct Fiat 9.55535 specification, as clean oil is the best protection for a new actuator. If you live on the quieter roads around Norbury Park or near Norbury Hall, combining a service and a diagnostic check in one visit saves a second trip.
To reach us, take Northborough Road west or the A23 south to the Lombard roundabout, then the A236 across Mitcham Common and Carshalton Road to Hackbridge, about 18 minutes. If the car is in limp mode, we can collect it. Repairs carry our 3-month workmanship warranty.
