Short hops off Croydon Road and a tired charging system
Many Beddington journeys are short: school runs from the parked-up streets off Croydon Road, a trip to Wallington for shopping, a run up to Hackbridge station. The starter motor takes a big bite out of the battery every time, and the alternator only gets a few minutes to put it back. When the alternator is weak, a car used like this can seem fine for weeks and then refuse to start one cold morning, which is why owners often buy a new battery first and find the problem comes back.
The vehicle mix matters too. Vans and pickups working out of the yards along Beddington Lane, near the Beddington Energy Recovery Facility and the Farmlands, often carry beacons, inverters and chargers and spend a lot of time idling. Heavy electrical load at low engine speed is exactly when a worn alternator struggles, and grit thrown up by lorry traffic does belts and pulleys no favours. On a work van the first sign is often a squealing belt on a damp morning or lights that dim at idle.
We start with a proper charging test rather than guessing: battery condition, output under load with the lights and heater on, and a check of the main cable and earth strap, which on older vans are often corroded. If the alternator is at fault we'll give you a written quote, fit an OE-specification unit with a new belt, and back the work with our 3-month workmanship warranty.
Getting to us is simple. From Beddington village it's Church Road, then Croydon Road west to Wallington Green and straight up the A237 London Road to Soho Mills, about 1.6 miles in all. If the car won't start, or you'd rather not risk the trip on a flat battery, we can arrange collection from your street and bring it back once the charging system has been retested.
