The N47 diesel engine is the most common BMW repair we carry out. It was used in the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X1 and X3 from 2007 to 2015 and it has a well-documented timing chain weakness. The chain sits at the back of the engine, between the engine and gearbox, which is an unusually involved position to reach compared to most vehicles. The cold-start rattle is the tell-tale sign. BMW servicing requires the correct oil specification. N-series engines take Castrol 5W-30 C3, which is BMW Long Life-04. This is not just a viscosity grade. It is a specific formulation BMW requires for these engines. Using a generic 5W-30 that does not carry the LL-04 approval can accelerate timing chain wear over time and create ash deposits in the DPF. We use the right product.
The BMW CBS (Condition Based Servicing) system tracks multiple vehicle parameters and shows remaining service life for each item on the dashboard.
