The Pond, the Lombard roundabout and BMW wear points
Two roundabouts dominate driving in Thornton Heath. Thornton Heath Pond and the Lombard roundabout on the A23 both queue at peak times, and the streets between them, around Croydon University Hospital and Grangewood Park, are busy with buses and hospital traffic all day. That adds up to a lot of low-speed, stop-start work, which on a BMW shows up in the brakes, the auxiliary belt and, over time, in engine oil that is working harder than the service interval assumes. Idling in queues also keeps the cooling system working hard, so coolant condition and hoses are part of every inspection.
Many of the BMWs we see from around here are older 1 and 3 Series with a fair few miles on them, and on those cars leaks are the recurring theme. An oil filter housing gasket that weeps down the front of the engine can soak the auxiliary belt; once the belt is contaminated it swells and can fail, sometimes taking the engine's pulleys with it. We check for fresh oil around the housing and the belt's condition at every visit and tell you honestly how urgent it is.
Hospital staff and other shift workers often need a car they can rely on at odd hours, so we keep advice practical. If a fault needs fixing now, we say so; if it can wait until the next service, we note it and give you a written quote so you can plan. Where parts are in stock, most BMW gasket and belt jobs are completed the same day. For larger jobs, such as front suspension arms, we give you a realistic timescale with the quote so you can plan around your shifts.
To reach us, go to Thornton Heath Pond, take Thornton Road to the Lombard roundabout, and then follow Mitcham Road and Croydon Road across Mitcham Common. At the roundabout turn onto Carshalton Road into Hackbridge. It takes around 15 minutes. Collection can be arranged, and repairs are covered by our 3-month workmanship warranty.
