Bus lanes, commuter parking and a BMW's short-trip life in Morden
Morden town centre is built around buses. London Road past Morden Underground station is lined with stops, stands and crossings, so any car driving through spends a lot of time stopping and pulling away. For BMWs used mainly around here, the service picture is dominated by short-trip wear: brakes that wear on the front axle, oil that never quite reaches full temperature, and batteries that seldom get topped up properly.
One thing we often explain to Morden owners is how BMW's Condition Based Servicing reads that kind of use. CBS estimates oil condition from how the engine is used, so it will bring an oil service forward if the car works hard, but it cannot see everything. Fuel dilution from repeated cold starts is one example. That is why we look at your actual journeys when we recommend intervals, rather than simply resetting whatever the dashboard says. Diesel BMWs used this way also struggle to regenerate their particulate filters, so on those cars we read the soot level while the car is connected and tell you whether a longer run would help.
The St Helier Avenue side of Morden brings a different kind of driving. It is a wide dual carriageway down to Rose Hill, now at 30mph, and the long straight avenues of the estate have traffic calming. Speed humps and cushions are hard on front suspension bushes if taken briskly, so we check the front arms and anti-roll bar links as part of every inspection. Anything we find is explained and quoted before work.
Getting here is simple: Morden Hall Road to the roundabout by Morden Hall Park, then Morden Road into Mitcham, Cranmer Road and Carshalton Road south into Hackbridge. It is around 12 minutes. If you would rather go to work on the Northern line and leave the car with us, collection and delivery can be arranged, and repairs carry a 3-month workmanship warranty.
