Headlight Restoration at KITH Bodyworks & Accident Repair Centre, Hackbridge.

Everything explained clearly below.

Yellowed lenses transmit less light

UV exposure breaks down the outer layer of polycarbonate plastic over time, causing the cloudy yellow appearance that reduces light output noticeably.

Sanding, polishing and sealing

The oxidised surface layer is removed by sanding through progressive grades of abrasive. Machine polishing restores optical clarity. UV sealant is applied to protect against re-oxidation.

MOT implications

Severely degraded headlights can reduce light output below the minimum required for an MOT pass. Restoration is far less expensive than a replacement headlight unit.

Per pair £80 inc VAT

Both headlights restored and sealed. Single unit £40 inc VAT.

UV sealant is not optional

Without sealant applied after polishing, the polished surface begins to re-oxidise within a few weeks. Every restoration we carry out includes UV sealant as standard.

Same-day in most cases

Headlight restoration is typically carried out while you wait or as a same-day appointment.

Modern headlight lenses are made from polycarbonate plastic, not glass. Polycarbonate is lighter and more impact resistant than glass, but it degrades under UV radiation. The outer surface oxidises progressively, yellowing and becoming opaque. A headlight that used to cast a clear, wide beam now casts a dull, yellow, narrow one. The vehicle looks older than it is and the driving experience at night is measurably worse. At KITH Bodyworks in Hackbridge, headlight restoration is typically completed the same day.

The restoration process removes the oxidised surface layer mechanically. We work through progressively finer grades of wet abrasive paper, removing the cloudy outer layer in stages. After the final abrasive stage, the lens is machine polished with a compound designed for polycarbonate. The result at this point is optical clarity close to what the lens had when new.

The UV sealant stage is where many cheaper restoration services cut corners. A freshly polished polycarbonate surface with no protection will start to re-oxidise within weeks. The oxidation returns faster after the first time because the outer factory coating has already been removed. A proper UV sealant extends the restored condition for one to two years under typical UK conditions.

The improvement from a professional headlight restoration is often dramatic. Lenses that were transmitting perhaps half of the intended light output can be restored to close to their original transmission. That improvement is visible both to the driver in terms of night visibility and to other road users in terms of the vehicle's light pattern.

From an MOT perspective, a headlight that has deteriorated enough to fail the light intensity test becomes an MOT failure. Restoration at £40 per unit or £80 per pair is considerably less expensive than sourcing replacement headlight units for most vehicles, particularly those with adaptive or LED headlight systems where units can cost several hundred pounds each.

Common questions

How long does headlight restoration last?

With our UV sealant applied, typically one to two years before a maintenance reapplication is worth doing.

My headlight has a crack in it. Can it be restored?

Restoration addresses oxidation and surface haze. A physically cracked lens must be replaced.

Will restoration help pass an MOT?

If degraded headlights are causing insufficient light output, restoration typically resolves the issue. We can advise on the current condition of your lenses.
