Stop-start on Streatham's red routes and the Fiat Dualogic
Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill are slow, bus-heavy red routes with a 20mph limit and pedestrian crossings every few hundred yards. For a 500, Panda or Punto with Dualogic, that means a clutch engagement at nearly every crossing, all managed by the hydraulic pump and actuator. The first signs of trouble are usually slower changes, a beep or a flashing gear display, and eventually a car that refuses to select a gear.
We read the gearbox control unit, check hydraulic pressure, fluid level and clutch wear, and test the actuator before recommending anything. A calibration can sometimes restore smooth changes. Where the pump, accumulator or clutch has failed, we replace it and calibrate afterwards. The Dualogic uses a specified hydraulic fluid, and the wrong type can damage seals, so we only use the correct one. Every Dualogic repair finishes with a road test in traffic, because that is where these systems show whether they are really right.
In the streets around Telford Park, many Fiats are small city cars that sit for days between trips to the high road or St Leonard's Church. That is hard on batteries, and a weak battery can upset both the Dualogic and Fiat's electric power steering, bringing up warnings that look worse than they are. We test the battery and charging system at every service, along with the 1.2 Fire belt's age. A city car that covers few miles can still reach the belt's age limit, and the belt gives no warning before it breaks. If there is no record of it being done, we will recommend it and quote in writing.
Because Streatham is around 20 minutes away, collection and delivery can be arranged, and it saves you negotiating Mitcham Lane and the Figges Marsh signals. Any work outside the service is quoted in writing first. Repairs carry our 3-month workmanship warranty, and we are open until 8pm Monday to Saturday.
