The clutch connects your engine to the gearbox. When the friction plate wears down, it stops gripping the flywheel properly. Engine revs rise when you accelerate but the car does not keep up. On a flat road it can be subtle. On a hill or under load it becomes obvious. At KITH Cars Garage in Hackbridge, clutch replacement is one of our most regular jobs.

The slipping feeling is the clearest warning sign. A high biting point, where the clutch does not start to engage until the pedal is almost fully released, is another. Clutch judder on pulling away, a shuddering sensation from a standstill, usually means contamination on the friction face or a worn pressure plate.

We fit the complete kit every time. Friction disc, pressure plate and release bearing come as a matched assembly. Replacing just the friction disc while leaving an older pressure plate saves money on parts but not on the job itself. The labour to access the clutch is the same either way, and a worn pressure plate will fail quickly against a new disc.

The dual-mass flywheel is worth understanding if you drive a diesel. It is a two-piece weighted assembly between the engine and gearbox designed to absorb torsional vibration. They wear over time and typically develop a deep rumble or knock at low revs when they do. Because the gearbox has to come out for the clutch anyway, replacing a worn DMF at the same time adds relatively little to the total cost. Doing it on a separate occasion means paying for gearbox removal all over again.

On every clutch job we inspect the clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder and hydraulic hose. A new clutch in a hydraulic system that is starting to fail will not feel right. Soft pedal, difficulty disengaging, or clutch drag on gear changes can all follow. We flag anything we find and quote separately before reassembly.

The road test after completion covers a range of conditions. First gear take-up from standstill. Full-load acceleration in second and third to confirm no slipping. Several hill starts. The car does not come back to you until we are satisfied.
