HDi or BlueHDi: keeping a Croydon Citroën diesel worth running
Since August 2023 the whole of Croydon has sat inside the ULEZ, and that changed the maths on older Citroën diesels. Most pre-Euro 6 1.6 HDi cars now pay the daily charge, while a BlueHDi meeting Euro 6 does not. For drivers heading out from Shirley or along the A235 Brighton Road every day, a compliant diesel is worth keeping healthy, and that mainly means looking after its AdBlue and particulate filter systems.
The BlueHDi's AdBlue pump, heater and sensors can fail, bringing up a top-up message even when the tank is full and then a countdown to a no-start. On many models these parts are built into the tank assembly. We diagnose which part has failed before quoting, so you are not paying for a full tank unit when a sensor would do. Where the tank assembly is the only fix, we fit a genuine or matching-quality unit and clear the countdown properly so the car is not left in limbo.
Private-hire Citroëns working the ranks by East Croydon station and the crowds at Boxpark pile on miles in short, slow bursts. On older 1.6 HDi engines that often shows as a chuffing noise and a diesel smell in the cabin from failed injector seals, with black carbon round the injectors. Replace the seals early and it is a routine job. Leave it and the injectors can seize in the head. For a car that earns its living, that is the difference between a morning off the road and several days.
We also check the turbo oil feed pipe on these engines, as its internal filter can block and starve the turbo. If you are weighing up an older HDi and wondering if it is worth repairing inside the ULEZ, we will give you an honest written quote and a straight opinion. Repairs carry our 3-month workmanship warranty, and early morning drop-offs are possible from 8am on weekdays and Saturdays.
