Why a hard brake pedal on a PureTech matters more in Coulsdon
On many 1.2 PureTech engines, the wet timing belt can degrade and shed material into the oil. One consequence people do not expect is a hard brake pedal. The brake vacuum pump is fed with engine oil, and debris can restrict that feed, reducing the servo assistance. On a flat road that is unpleasant. Coming down Chipstead Valley Road or the lanes near Happy Valley Park, with walkers and horse riders round the next bend, it is a real safety concern. The same debris can also block the oil pump pickup, which is why a low oil pressure warning on one of these engines should never be ignored.
If you notice the pedal feeling firmer than usual, or a low oil pressure warning, book the car in rather than waiting for the service. We measure the belt with the correct gauge, check the oil pickup and vacuum pump feed, and give you a written quote covering what we find. A belt replacement on these engines is normally a full day and can take longer if the sump and pickup need cleaning.
The hills also test the electric parking brake on first-generation C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso models, which are popular family cars on the estates around Coulsdon. Motor and control unit faults show up as a parking brake faulty message, and on a steep drive you want that sorted properly. We test the parking brake motor unit, its cables and the control unit before recommending parts. We also check the rear callipers, because on these cars the motor pulls cables to the rear brakes, and a seized calliper mechanism makes it struggle.
The drive to us is simple: Smitham Downs Road to the A237, then straight up through Woodcote and Wallington. If the car is showing an oil pressure warning, do not drive it; we can arrange collection or recovery instead. All repairs carry our 3-month workmanship warranty, and nothing is done without a written quote you have agreed.
