What brake repairs do we carry out?

We replace brake pads and discs on all four corners, service or replace brake callipers, bleed and flush brake fluid, replace brake hoses and pipes, repair or replace handbrake cables, and carry out ABS sensor replacement. All work is to manufacturer specification using OEM-equivalent parts from Textar, TRW, Brembo or Pagid depending on the vehicle make. Every brake repair is road tested before handover.

Brake pads and discs — why they go together

Fitting new pads to a scored or grooved disc, or new discs with worn pads, causes uneven braking and rapid re-wear within a few thousand miles. We always replace pads and discs as a set on the same axle. If one disc is borderline, we replace both — uneven disc thickness between left and right causes brake pull and vibration. After fitting, brakes are bedded in properly during the road test.

Brake callipers — seized pistons and dragging brakes

A seized calliper piston keeps the brake pad pressed against the disc even when you release the pedal. The disc and pad overheat, the disc can warp, fuel consumption increases, and brake performance drops to dangerous levels. A dragging brake can also cause the wheel to seize at low speed. Calliper replacement or rebuild resolves seized pistons and slider pins. Both sides of the axle are checked whenever we work on brakes.

Brake fluid — the invisible maintenance item

Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere through the brake lines and reservoir over time. As moisture content increases, the boiling point drops. On a long downhill run or track day, degraded fluid can vaporise inside the calliper, creating a compressible gas bubble. The pedal goes soft or to the floor. This is brake fade caused by fluid, not heat alone. We test brake fluid moisture content at every service and replace it if it fails — typically every two years regardless of mileage.

Electric parking brake — the extra step on modern cars

Most vehicles from 2010 onwards have an electric parking brake (EPB) integrated into the rear callipers. To change the rear pads, the EPB motor must be retracted electronically using a compatible diagnostic tool. Simply pushing the piston back with a press will damage the motor. We carry the correct tools for BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW, Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, Peugeot and all other makes with EPB systems. After fitting, the EPB is re-applied and tested.

How long do brakes last?

Front pads on most cars last 30,000–50,000 miles depending on driving style and vehicle weight. Rear pads last longer — often 60,000–80,000 miles. Discs typically last two to three sets of pads. Urban driving with frequent heavy braking wears pads much faster than motorway commuting. Performance cars with heavier vehicles and larger callipers wear pads faster. How do I know if my brakes need replacing?

Squealing or grinding noise when braking, a brake warning light, the car pulling to one side when you brake, a spongy or soft pedal, vibration through the pedal or steering wheel, or the car taking longer to stop than it used to. Any of these is a reason to book an inspection.

Is it safe to drive with squealing brakes?

Squealing is the wear indicator making contact with the disc — it means the pads are getting low but have not failed yet. Grinding means metal on metal and the disc is almost certainly being damaged. Squealing can wait a week; grinding should be booked immediately.

Do you replace front and rear brakes at the same time?

Only what needs doing. We inspect all four corners and replace the axles that require attention. If the fronts are worn and the rears have plenty left, we only do the fronts.

How long does a brake job take?

A single axle pad and disc replacement is 1.5–2 hours. A full four-corner renewal takes 3–4 hours. EPB systems add 30 minutes. Same-day appointments are usually available.

Can I just replace the pads and keep the old discs?

If the discs are within minimum thickness and free of deep scoring, yes. We measure disc thickness and check for runout before recommending disc replacement. If discs are borderline, replacing them with the pads is better value — fitting new pads to near-limit discs will wear the pads faster.

What brands of brake pads and discs do you use?

We use Textar, TRW, Brembo, Pagid and Mintex OEM-equivalent pads and discs. These are the same brands fitted at main dealers. We do not use unbranded or low-quality parts.

My brakes are vibrating when I stop. What causes this?

Brake disc runout — the disc surface is not perfectly flat and varies slightly in thickness around the circumference. As the calliper clamps onto the uneven surface, the piston pulses in and out, causing vibration. New discs resolve this. Warped discs from overheating are also common on vehicles with a history of towing or sustained heavy braking.

Why is my car pulling to one side when I brake?

Uneven braking force — usually a seized calliper on one side not releasing, a stuck slider pin, or a significant difference in pad thickness between left and right. Occasionally a brake hose that has deteriorated internally and is acting as a one-way valve. We diagnose the cause before replacing parts.

My brake warning light is on but the pads look okay. What is it?

Brake fluid level warning is separate from pad wear warning on most vehicles. If the fluid is low, the level sensor triggers the light regardless of pad condition. Check the fluid reservoir — if low, there is either a leak in the system or the pads have worn down enough to drop the level. In either case, book an inspection.

Yes. A handbrake that does not hold is both dangerous and an MOT failure. The cause is usually stretched handbrake cable, worn rear brake shoes (on drum rear brakes), or a fault in the electric parking brake. We diagnose the cause and repair it.

Do you replace brake hoses?

Yes. Brake hoses deteriorate internally and can act as a one-way valve, allowing pressure to build up in the calliper but not release. This causes a dragging brake and rapid disc and pad wear. Hose replacement is included in our inspection if deterioration is found.

My brakes squeal in wet weather. Is this normal?

Light squealing in wet weather as the brakes clear surface rust from the discs is normal and clears within a few applications. Persistent squealing in wet weather that does not clear usually indicates glazed pads or glazed disc surfaces from light braking use — common on cars that are driven gently.

Can you replace brakes on electric vehicles?

Yes. EVs use regenerative braking which means the physical brakes are used less. This can cause disc surface rust and pad glazing from infrequent use. Do you bleed brakes after replacing pads?

New pads and discs have a thin film from the manufacturing process. Bed-in involves a series of controlled stops from moderate speed to transfer a thin, even layer of pad material onto the disc surface. This prevents vibration, hot spots and uneven wear. We carry out bed-in during the road test before every handover.

Can I book brakes for my BMW without going to BMW?

Yes. BMW main dealer pricing for brakes is typically £300–£500 per axle including parts and labour. We carry out the same work using Textar or TRW OEM-spec parts for significantly less, and we reset the BMW brake service indicator as standard.

Do you do performance brake upgrades?

Do you replace brake discs on both sides at the same time?

Always. Both discs on the same axle are replaced together. Fitting one new disc and leaving one worn disc on the same axle causes uneven braking force and will pull the car to one side under braking.

My brake pedal goes to the floor. Is this an emergency?
