Buses, bus lanes and sudden stops around the Clock Tower
Thornton Heath has some of the busiest bus corridors in the area. London Road, Brigstock Road and the High Street around the Clock Tower see buses pulling in and out all day, and Thornton Road between Thornton Heath Pond and the Lombard roundabout queues at peak times. Stop-start driving like this brings plenty of sudden braking, often in the wet. ABS and stability control help you stop in a straight line and steer at the same time, and when a wheel speed sensor fails, both are switched off.
Many cars in Thornton Heath are older petrol and diesels, along with high-mileage private-hire cars, and both tend to suffer ABS faults. On older cars, years of road spray and salt corrode the sensor into the hub, and the wiring hardens and cracks where it flexes. On private-hire cars, frequent brake work means sensors get disturbed more often. In the narrow terraces of West Thornton, tight parking and kerb knocks can damage a sensor or its wiring too.
When the car arrives, we read the ABS module to find the wheel and type of fault, compare live wheel speeds and test the sensor circuit. If the sensor is seized, we remove it carefully and clean the hub before fitting the new one at the right gap. We check the reluctor ring or bearing encoder for damage too. You'll get a written quote explaining the cause, and we fit OE or OE-equivalent parts.
The route is Thornton Road to the Lombard roundabout, then the A236 west past Therapia Lane and across Mitcham Common, turning left onto Carshalton Road into Hackbridge, about 5 miles. With only the ABS light on, most cars can be driven here carefully. On Crystal Palace home match days, allow for road closures near Selhurst Park. The repair is covered by our 3-month workmanship warranty.
