School runs, Woodcote Road and Wallington's short trips
A lot of Wallington's driving is short and slow. Several large schools, including the grammar schools and Wilson's School down towards Roundshaw, bring heavy school-run traffic morning and afternoon, and the town-centre junctions around Woodcote Road, Stafford Road and Manor Road build up at rush hour and on Saturdays. Short trips like these, often with a full car of children, rarely add up to big mileages, so the air filter tends to reach its time limit before its mileage one. Most handbooks give a limit of around two to four years.
That doesn't mean the filter stays clean. Stop-start driving along Woodcote Road means the engine spends time breathing exhaust from the cars and buses around it. Around Bandon Hill and South Wallington, cars parked near Roundshaw Downs, the open grassland on the old Croydon Airport, can pick up grass seed and leaves in the air intake in summer and autumn. Most is caught by the filter, but a clogged inlet or airbox restricts airflow.
Since the ULEZ expansion in August 2023, some Wallington families have bought newer compliant cars and others have kept their older compliant ones. Either way the filter protects the airflow sensor and, on turbocharged engines, the turbo. We clean out the airbox, check the seal and fit an OE-equivalent filter from a supplier such as MANN, Mahle or Bosch. It takes most cars 15 to 30 minutes. If yours still has life in it, we'll say so rather than change it.
The route could hardly be simpler: north on Woodcote Road past the station, over the A232 at Wallington Green and on up London Road to Soho Mills. You can drop the car in and walk to Hackbridge station, but a filter on its own is usually quick enough to wait for. We'll quote in writing first, and the work is backed by a 3-month workmanship warranty.
