Warning lights, LED headlamps and tyres on premium cars
Wimbledon has a high share of newer premium cars, SUVs and hybrids, from the big houses near Cannizaro Park and the Common to the streets around Wimbledon Park and Wimbledon Chase. These cars are packed with electronic systems, and the MOT checks that their warning lights behave. An illuminated airbag, seatbelt pretensioner, ABS, electronic parking brake or engine management light is a fail, as is a tyre pressure warning on cars first used from 2012. Often the fault is minor, but it has to be fixed before the car will pass.
Lighting is the other common trap. Many premium cars have xenon or LED headlamps with automatic levelling and, on some xenon units, headlamp washers; where these are fitted as standard and don't work, the car can fail. So can aftermarket HID bulbs fitted into headlamps designed for halogen, which scatter glare. The tester checks the beam pattern and aim with a beam-setting unit, and a lamp knocked out of line in a tight car park will show up.
Tyres wear quickly on heavy SUVs and powerful cars, especially in the stop-start traffic around the station and The Broadway and down the steep A219 Wimbledon Hill Road. Wide, low-profile tyres also hide inner-edge wear that's hard to see without the car on a lift. If the car fails, we explain every item plainly and give a written quote, using OE or OE-equivalent parts where repairs are needed. Leave it with us for repair and retest within 10 working days and the partial retest is free.
From the town centre it's about 5.5 miles: the A24 through South Wimbledon to Morden, St Helier Avenue to Rose Hill, then Wrythe Lane and Hackbridge Road. With controlled parking across most of Wimbledon, collection is often easier than driving over yourself. Repairs carry our 3-month workmanship warranty.
