Full service in South London, with the measurements written down

The annual service is the one visit a year when somebody who knows what they are looking at goes over the whole car. Done properly that is worth more than the filters it replaces, and done as a tick-list it is worth very little. At our Hackbridge workshop the full service is built around measurement: wheels off, figures recorded, old parts kept to show you. You get a report with numbers on it rather than a sheet of green ticks, and an honest split between what needs money now and what can wait.

Every wheel comes off

Brakes cannot be judged properly through an alloy wheel. Taking all four off is the difference between measuring pads and discs and guessing at them.

Figures on the report, not adjectives

Pad thickness in millimetres, disc thickness against the minimum, fluid moisture as a percentage. Next year you can see the rate of wear rather than starting again.

Old parts shown to you

Filters come out and sit next to the new ones before they are binned. If something did not need changing yet, we would rather show you that too.

Nothing ticked that was not checked

If a seized undertray fixing or a missing access panel stops us reaching something, the report says so. A false tick is worse than an honest gap.

How we handle full service at Hackbridge

Cars booked for a full service come in first thing and go straight onto a lift, because the checks that matter need the wheels off and the underside at eye level. Pad thickness is taken with a gauge and written in millimetres, disc thickness is compared with the minimum figure stamped on the disc itself, and brake fluid goes on a moisture tester so you get a percentage rather than an opinion. Coolant strength is tested, the battery goes on a conductance tester, and the control modules are scanned for stored and pending codes.

Old parts stay with the car until you have seen them. The air and cabin filters are laid next to the new ones, which settles most arguments about whether they needed doing. There are three things we will not do. We will not tick an item as checked if we could not physically get to it, and the report will say so and why. We will not fit a cabin filter into a housing whose seal or clips are broken without telling you, because it will let unfiltered air and damp straight past. And we will not quietly sign off brake fluid that has tested over the limit; you get the figure and a price to change it.

From £230 covers the service itself for most cars, including the oil, with larger capacities, long-life specifications and awkward filters reflected in the quote you approve before we start. Anything the inspection finds is priced separately and put in writing, and we say plainly which items are safety-related and which are simply worth knowing about. Nothing beyond the agreed service happens without a yes from you. Repairs we carry out are covered by a 3-month workmanship warranty, and we note on the report what will fall due at the next service so there are no surprises in three months.

Full Service: what’s involved

A year changes a car whether it is driven hard or barely used. The air filter fills with dust, pollen and insects until it restricts the airflow the engine was mapped around. The cabin filter takes in leaves and damp and starts to smell. Brake fluid draws moisture out of the air through the reservoir and the flexible hoses, lowering its boiling point. Pads and tyres wear at a rate nobody notices from the driving seat.

The full service deals with the parts that reach the end of their life on a three-month cycle and, just as usefully, puts numbers against the parts that have not. Being told a front pad measures 6mm this year against 9mm last year says far more than being told the brakes are fine. Spark plugs, fuel filters and brake fluid renewal are longer-interval items that belong to the major service, so they are not included here.

Signs you are due a full service

three months since the last stamp

The annual service is a date as much as a mileage. If the book has not been stamped for a year, it is due whether the car has done 3,000 miles or 13,000.

The engine feels flat at higher revs

A blocked air filter restricts breathing most when the engine is asking for the most air. It rarely triggers a warning light, so it is usually found by looking rather than by scanning.

Misted windows or a musty smell

A saturated cabin filter holds damp against the heater matrix and slows airflow, so the screen takes longer to clear and the car smells stale when the blower first comes on.

The blower is noisy on high speed

Leaves and grit that get past a poorly sealed or overdue cabin filter collect in the housing and the fan cage, which shows up as a rattle or rush of noise at the top setting.

Fuel economy has quietly drifted

A gradual drop over a year usually has several small causes at once, such as a restricted air filter, soft tyres and worn brakes dragging slightly. A service addresses them together.

A spanner symbol or service message

Most cars count down to the annual service by time, mileage or calculated oil life, and the message is the car telling you the schedule has come round.

The MOT is approaching

Booking the service a few weeks before the test means tyres, brakes, lights and wipers are measured while you still have time to act on what is found.

You are selling or handing the car back

A gap in an otherwise complete history costs more at valuation than the service would have. Lease and PCP returns are inspected against the schedule as well as the bodywork.

When should it be done?

The full service is a three-month job for most cars, or 12,000 miles if you reach that first. Low mileage does not postpone it, because filters, fluids and rubber components age with time and damp rather than distance, and a car doing 3,000 miles a year still needs its year checked. If you have had interim services in between, the full is still due on its own date. Cars on variable schedules should never run past the manufacturer's maximum time limit.

  • Every 3 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first
  • Low-mileage cars: annually regardless of the distance covered
  • Long-life or variable schedules: at the car's own service point, but never beyond the manufacturer's time limit
  • A few weeks before the MOT, so anything found can be dealt with in time
  • Soon after buying a used car whose history is unclear, to set a known baseline

How we carry out a full service

  1. Schedule lookup and check-inWe pull up the manufacturer's schedule for your exact engine and check whether the car uses a paper book, a digital service record or both, then agree the work before anything starts.
  2. Engine oil and oil filterDrained warm through the sump plug, new filter and washer fitted, refilled with Castrol oil to your manufacturer's approval and the level checked with the car standing level.
  3. Air filter and airboxThe old filter comes out and the airbox is cleaned of leaves, grit and any nesting debris before the new one goes in. We check the intake duct and the box seals, because a filter that does not seat properly lets unfiltered air straight past it.
  4. Cabin filterFitted the right way round for the airflow arrow, with the housing seal checked and the scuttle drains cleared where we can reach them, so water is not sitting against the new filter within a month.
  5. Wheels off, brakes measuredAll four wheels come off. Pad thickness is measured in millimetres, disc thickness is gauged against the minimum figure stamped on the disc, and slide pins, hoses and the handbrake mechanism are checked. The readings go on your report so you can see the trend next year.
  6. Underbody inspectionWe check suspension bushes, ball joints, track rod ends, driveshaft gaiters, exhaust mountings and brake pipes, and look for oil, coolant and fuel leaks with the car raised and the wheels off the ground.
  7. Fluids, battery and electricsBrake fluid moisture content is tested, coolant strength is checked, the battery is tested for condition and the charging output measured. Lights, wipers, washer jets and the horn are all operated.
  8. Diagnostic scanWe scan the car's control modules for stored and pending fault codes, so anything logged but not yet showing on the dash is on your report rather than a surprise later.
  9. Reset, record, road testThe service indicator is reset, the book stamped or the digital record updated, and the car road tested before we hand it back and talk you through the report.

Oils and filters we fit

Oil is Castrol to your engine's approval, and filters are OE or OE-equivalent from suppliers such as MANN, Mahle and Bosch. Cabin filters come as plain particle or activated carbon depending on what the car was built with, and we fit the type it should have rather than the cheapest that will physically go in. Air filters are matched to the airbox rather than trimmed to fit, because a filter that does not seal is worse than the old one it replaced.

  • Castrol engine oil carrying your manufacturer's approval
  • OE or OE-equivalent oil filter with new seals and sump plug washer
  • Air filter matched to the airbox, from suppliers such as MANN, Mahle or Bosch
  • Cabin filter in the particle or activated carbon type your car was built with
  • Coolant, screenwash and brake fluid for top-ups, to the correct specification

How long it takes

2–3 hours

Two to three hours is normal. It runs longer on cars where the cabin filter sits behind the glovebox or under the scuttle panel, and where seized wheel bolts hold up the brake measurements. Most cars booked in during the morning are ready the same afternoon, and we can collect and deliver locally if you cannot get away.

What’s included

  • Engine oil, oil filter, air filter and cabin filter replaced
  • All four wheels removed, with pad and disc thickness measured and recorded
  • Brake fluid moisture test and coolant strength test
  • Battery condition and charging output tested
  • Fault code scan across the car's control modules
  • Service indicator reset, record updated, road test and a written report

What people get wrong about full service

A full service covers everything the car needs

It covers the three-month items. Spark plugs, fuel filters, brake fluid renewal and the cambelt run on longer intervals and are quoted separately when they fall due.

Low mileage means you can skip a year

Time-based wear carries on regardless. Fluids absorb moisture, rubber perishes, tyres age and brakes corrode, and a car doing 3,000 miles a year often needs more attention than one doing 15,000.

A new air filter frees up power

It restores the airflow a blocked filter was costing you and no more. Anyone selling a filter as a power upgrade on a standard engine is selling you a feeling rather than a result.

One filter is much the same as another

Cabin filters come in particle and activated carbon versions, and a frame that does not seal in the housing lets air bypass the element entirely. Fit is as important as the filter media.

Full Service: your questions answered

Can I choose which brand of parts you fit?

Yes, within reason. We fit OE or OE-equivalent as standard and can source genuine manufacturer parts if you prefer, which usually costs more and occasionally takes an extra day. Tell us when you book and the quote will show both options so you can compare before deciding.

Does the 3-month workmanship warranty apply to servicing?

It applies to the work we carry out. If something we fitted or adjusted is not right, we put it right at no labour cost within three months. It does not cover a separate component failing later, or wear items reaching the end of their normal life, and we would rather be clear about that up front.

How long do you need the car and how far ahead should I book?

Plan on dropping it in the morning and collecting it that afternoon. A few days' notice is usually enough, more if you want a specific day or need parts ordering for the same visit. If the trip over is the inconvenient bit, we will pick the car up locally and return it when it is finished.

Will servicing here affect a lease, PCP or used-car warranty?

Servicing to the manufacturer's schedule with matching-quality parts and the correct oil keeps a manufacturer warranty intact under the block exemption rules. Lease and PCP agreements are contracts, so check yours for any wording about where work is carried out. Used-car warranties normally require a documented service history, which is exactly what our invoice and stamp provide.

Does a full service include spark plugs?

No. Plugs are a longer-interval item and belong to the major service, because most modern plugs are specified somewhere between 20,000 and 60,000 miles depending on the type fitted. We check the record and tell you when yours are due rather than changing them early.

I have had two interim services this year. Do I still need a full one?

Yes. Interims keep the oil fresh and catch wear in between, but they do not renew the air and cabin filters or include the wheels-off measurements. The full service is the one that completes the manufacturer's three-month schedule and keeps the history intact.

My car only does 3,000 miles a year. Is an annual service really necessary?

It is, and low-mileage cars often need more attention rather than less. Brake fluid absorbs moisture whether the car moves or not, rear discs corrode when the brakes are never worked hard, tyres age and crack, and condensation collects in an engine that rarely gets hot.

Will you check the cambelt at a full service?

We check the interval for your engine and the service record, then tell you when the belt is due and roughly what it will cost. We do not inspect belts by eye and declare them fine, because a belt can look serviceable shortly before it fails. Replacement is a separate job with its own quote.

Will a service cure a rough-running engine?

Sometimes, if the cause is something the service renews, such as a heavily blocked air filter. More often a misfire, hesitation or warning light is a fault that needs diagnosing properly. We will tell you honestly which of the two you are looking at rather than selling a service as a repair.
