When to Change Brake Pads — Signs Your Brakes Need Replacing
Knowing when to change your brake pads prevents unexpected brake failure, avoids MOT failure and prevents expensive disc damage. This guide covers the key signs that brake pads need replacing.
The wear indicator squeal
Modern brake pads have a metal wear indicator tab built into the pad. When the pad wears to a certain depth, the tab makes contact with the disc and produces a high-pitched squealing noise. This noise is loudest when braking at low speed and may not be present every time you brake. This is the clearest signal that pad replacement is due.
Grinding noise
Once the friction material is fully worn, the metal backing plate contacts the disc directly. This produces a grinding or metal-on-metal sound and causes rapid disc damage. Any grinding noise when braking requires immediate inspection.
Increased stopping distance
A subjective but important indicator. If the car feels like it takes longer to stop than usual, or the pedal needs to be pressed harder for the same braking effect, the pads may be near the end of their life — or there may be a hydraulic issue.
Brake warning light
A brake warning light that illuminates while driving can indicate low brake pad level (via an electrical sensor in the pad on some vehicles) or low brake fluid level (which drops as pads wear). Either requires inspection.
Visual inspection
On most cars you can see the brake calliper and pad through the wheel spokes. If the pad appears thin — less than 3mm of friction material remaining — replacement is approaching.
Common questions
How often should brake pads be changed?
Every 30,000–50,000 miles for front pads. 60,000–80,000 miles for rear pads. Urban driving accelerates pad wear significantly.
Should front and rear pads be changed at the same time?
Not necessarily — front pads wear faster than rear. We replace the axles that need attention.
Can I just replace brake pads without discs?
If the discs are above minimum thickness and not scored, yes. We measure before recommending disc replacement.
