Car Service Intervals — How Often Should You Service Your Car?
Service intervals vary by manufacturer, engine type, oil specification and driving conditions. This guide explains the correct servicing intervals for most common vehicles and why following them matters.
Manufacturer-recommended intervals
Most manufacturers recommend servicing every 10,000–12,500 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Variable service intervals — used by BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen Group — adjust the interval based on driving conditions and oil degradation, allowing up to 18,000 miles between services in some cases. We recommend treating this as a maximum, not a target.
Why the time limit matters as much as the mileage
A car that covers only 5,000 miles per year still needs an annual service. Engine oil degrades thermally and chemically regardless of how many miles have been driven. Moisture contamination, oxidation and additive depletion all occur over time. The 3-month time limit is as important as the mileage figure.
Interim vs full vs major service
An interim service (every 6 months or 6,000 miles) is an oil and filter change with a safety inspection — designed for high-mileage drivers who cannot wait 3 months between oil changes. A full service (annually) adds spark plugs, fuel filter, air and cabin filters, and a more comprehensive inspection. A major service (every 2–3 years) adds coolant replacement and a timing belt inspection.
Why correct oil specification matters
Using the wrong oil — even a high-quality oil with the wrong specification — can cause timing chain wear on BMW and VW Group engines, DPF damage on diesel cars, and in some cases void the manufacturer warranty. We check the exact oil specification from your engine code, not just the model.
High-mileage and commercial vehicles
Vehicles covering more than 12,000 miles per year should be serviced every 6 months or 6,000 miles. Taxis, courier vehicles, and commercial vans in continuous use benefit from 5,000-mile oil changes to maintain oil quality in engines under continuous stress.
Common questions
Can I extend my service interval to save money?
Not recommended. Extending oil change intervals increases engine wear, can cause timing chain damage on susceptible engines, and accelerates DPF blockage on diesel cars.
Does servicing at an independent garage affect my warranty?
No — UK law protects your right to use an independent garage using manufacturer-specification oil and parts.
How much does a service cost at KITH Cars?
